Background: In a Chicago research laboratory, the experiments in the area of mind-over-matter research by Terrance Page and another partner were sabotaged. During a lab explosion that killed the scientists, Dr. Page's two teenaged children Jerry and Karen were injured. The two were rushed to a hospital, treated and later released. It wasn't until later in 1984 when the two siblings discovered that the accident had left them with incredible powers. Jerry found he could change the molecular make-up of his body by touching certain substances. His younger sister found she could go into the minds of others and alter their emotional responses.
The two took on costumed heroic identities of the User and Emotion. Karen designed and made the costumes for both of them. After a year of fighting crime as a duo, they attempted to join Chicago's team of heroes called the American League. The two were turned down for membership, unbeknownst to them, simply because of the color of their skin. Four months later, the two decided to leave Chicago all together after their mother died of medical complications. They made a new start in New York City, taking over an apartment owned by their aunt and uncle who were leaving to retire in Florida. In the summer of 1986, they were contacted by a hero whom they worked with previously - Mystifier. He requested their help in stopping an invasion of Earth by the evil sorcerer Zandorok. After that adventure, the eight young heroes decided to stick together as a team called the Protectors. A few months later, after the Octagon murdered the heroine Star Light, Karen hung up her Emotion costume for awhile. Jerry continued as part of the team and soon met and fell in love with Crystal Tofana, the heroine called Night Owl. As a hero in the local NYC ghettos where they lived, the User encountered a lot of street crime and prejudice. One of the big crime bosses in the area was Jake "Steel Claw" Dunbar. On more than one occasion did they cross pathes, with the User continuing to take down pieces of Dunbar's organization. In 1987, a criminal known as the Assassin attacked and kidnapped Night Owl. When the User interferred, he was severely injured and hospitalized for a day or so. Once released, he went on a world-wide search to find the woman he lovedforof revenge, the User kept his eyes open for when and where the man would appear again. He has vowed to bring this for-hire-hitman to justice. On Christmas eve in 1987, Jerry proposed to Crystal. Exactly one year later, the two were wed with their family and friends in attendance. Motivation: Jerry Page is a caring, compassionate man. He is willing to go out of his way to help those less fortunate than himself, even to the point of sacrificing his own needs for others. He is known in his community as a strong, African-American male and he tries to set a good example for other like young men. he knows what life on the street can do to a person, so any time he can help turn someone's life around for the good then he feels he's done a good thing. Professionally, he is a foreman of a construction company and a hard worker. Heroically, he tries to keep the scum out of the local NYC neighborhoods but also faces larger menaces and situations as part of the Protectors. |
