Background: Crystal Tofana was born into a family of law enforcement professionals. Her father was a cop, as was her uncle and her grandfather. From the time she was a little girl, she knew she one day wanted to follow in those footsteps, to serve and protect. When her father was killed in the line of duty when she was sixteen, her mother tried to convince her that it was too dangerous a profession. Crystal was just more determined. Upon graduation from high school, she enrolled in the Los Angeles country training program for law enforcement. Crystal was the top of her class in all areas and was soon on the patrol beat as an officer. In no time at all, she was one of the most decorated rookies on the force due to her acts of heroism and courage. But all of that came to a quick end in 1983 when she lost her sight due to a tragic accident while in the line of duty. The head of the precinct wanted to look after Crystal, having known and worked with her father many years before. He arranged for her to stay with the force, working in office. However, filing reports was not enough to satisfy the young woman. She longed to get back into action, but her lack of sight was a huge obstacle to overcome. Fate intervened when someone she put behind bars years before decided to kidnap her for revenge. She was taken to an occult gathering and was to be used as a sacrifice to summon demonic beings. The ritual, however, was cut short thanks to the young man known as the Mystifier. The costumed sorcerer saved the girl and the two became friends. He saw in her a strong will and desire to overcome her disability. Using the spells of his library, he tried to heal her. When that failed, he wanted to grant her abilities to make her life a bit easier: enhanced senses, agility and strength. Since she often loved it when he took her flying under his own magical abilities, he granted her that power as well. (continued below...)

(continued from above...) After some training with her new gifts, Crystal decided to follow Mystifier's lead and became a costumed crime fighter. Donning a costume of white and gray, she became known as the Night Owl (1985). She soon became the scourge of the west coast underworld, disrupting their operations and making herself a number of enemies. A year and a half later (1986), Mystifier contacted her to come to New York City to take his place on a team he formed called the Protectors while he went off on a personal quest. While on the team, she met and fell in love with one of the members of the group - the User. There love would soon be put to the test when Night Owl was kidnapped by a costumed criminal named the Assassin (1987). The User rescued her from imprisonment a few months later. The two young heroes were engaged by the end of that year and married the following year (1988). Motivation: Crystal has a very strong sense of justice as well as an urge to help others in any way she can. Most of this she got from her father and the other police officers in her family growing up. She tends to be a strong, confident woman, and she does not let her disability get the best of her. Due to her lack of sight, she relies on other senses and a quick, thinking mind to help her out of difficult situations. She is a compassionate, loving person.
