Background: Background: During ancient times, Setar was one of many magic users who communed together to improve their skills. This dark-haired man with an angular chin always wanted to take charge of the group, to be served by them. With his silver tongue, he was able to gather loyalty from some including the lovely Mekona. When the sorcerors were sought for enslavement, the lead wizard Gattasurzar cast their essences into gemstones and scattered them across the planet and cosmos. Setar's essence was transfered into a gemstone a lay dormant for many centuries.
Harold Lindberg grew up in Scottsville, Kentucky, with his parents Tom and Sarah and younger sister Betsy. Upon completion of high school with honors he went on to the University of Louisville where he got his masters degree in Ancient Middle-Eastern Civilizations (1976). Two years later on an Egyptian archeological dig lead by Professor Badhir, the group uncovered the Temple of Amatec, a burial shrine to an ancient king. On the dig, Lindberg discovered a gem stone along with other artifacts. Upon touching the stone, Setar's will was released and overtook that of Lindberg's, allowing the ancient wizard to live through the man. Upon seeing reports of beings with great power (heroes and villains), Setar decided to adopt a costumed identity of his own and began to call himself the Sinister Spectrum. The villain had many run-ins with the Justice Gang. One member in particular did the villain feel a certain connection to - Star Light, whose power gem was connected to the ancient wizards of long ago. Once Lindberg and his stone were seperated, the man appeared to no longer have any recollection of his actions since the dig in 1978. Even intense mental probing failed to yield any traces of the memories of the super-criminal. Freemont Traynor, his lawyer, got him released on a plea of temporary insanity. The gemstone was returned to the Egyptian government but was stolen a few years later by Arab terrorists. Star Light again battled the villain and seperated the gem from the man. This time she took it back to the Justice Gang's satellite for safe keeping. In 1986, Mystifier of the Protectors borrowed the stone to take two thin slivers to help improve the powers of one of his teammates. The gem disappeared by the hero's mansion before he could return it to the Justice Gang. In the early summer of 1990, the Spectrum reappeared and focused his attentions on Baltimore's Dillin Memorial museum and the Eye of Inja gemstone imbedded in a statue. It was there that he released Mekona, now calling herself Crystaline from her captivity. The two fought a group of local heroes who eventually formed the team Rough Justice but were not detained by the authorities. The heroes tracked the couple down a month or so later and fought them once more. Before that though, the couple got married, thus renewing their ancient love affair in modern times.
Motivation: The Sinister Spectrum is motivated by greed, pure and simple. He hungers for wealth, power and leadership of followers willing to do whatever he commands. Of course, all this comes from Setar and his will, which radiates out of the gemstone. Harold Lindberg is just a vessel for that will. When seperated from the gemstone, Lindberg tends to be more reserved and introspective. Still, there are elements in his own personna, no matter how deeply buried, that allowed Setar's will to graft to his own. The two have a bond that was instantaneous and lasting. It was as if they were meant to be as one. |
