Background: A young couple had fallen in love when they started working together in a jazz combo. Bill
Ballard was a piano player. Carol Hastings was a singer. The two were wed a few years later
and had one son named Scott. The boy was raised in a small community just north of New York City.
Carol died when Scott was young, so Bill had to raise the lad on his own.
When Scott was in high school in 1980, he happened to be driving alone in a desolate part of the countryside. It was then that he noticed a series of odd lights in the sky that appeared to touch down. The youth investigated it, discovered an alien spacecraft and its pilot - a member of the race called the Omni-Lords. An accident occurred, leading to the alien performing emergency surgery on the teen. The end result left Scott with altered throat muscles that enabled him to create amazing sonic blasts. He decided to use the abilities to help others as the heroic Larynx. He operated for a number of years as a solo hero. During that time, he would encounter the Omni-Lords again, battle super-powered criminals on Earth like Howler as well as face threats from other worlds like Firewing. He met other heroes as well during his adventures, sometimes with favorable results (like when he first teamed up with Amazon) and other times with less favorable results (like the time the Justice Gang brushed him off as a rookie). Eventually in 1986, he joined a hero team that called themselves the Protectors after being recruited by Mystifier to stop the threat of an evil sorcerer named Zandorok. Shortly after joining the Protectors, Scott's life would change forever as he met and fell in love with a wonderful young woman. The two would marry years later and raise a family together. Background (continued):
When the Protectors disbanded in the late 1990's, a number of the members were asked to join the Justice Gang, the team of Earth's greatest heroes. Larynx opted at this point to go into a semi-retirement state. Between his professional career, marriage and family, Scott felt he couldn't devote full time to another super-team. He still dons his costume on occasion when the situation warrants it. Motivation: In his younger days, Larynx could be a bit brash and unfocused. He would take risks because he had little to lose. All that changed when he fell in love with Rita (Hydro Girl) Mason. She helped him to strengthen his good qualities (loyalty, bravery, compassion) and de-emphasize the harmful ones. Today Scott is a dedicated musician, songwriter and parent. He operates a reputable nightclub in New York that he and his father built up from humble beginnings. |
