Background: Rita Mason was born in 1960 in a mid-western town. There, she grew up in a loving, supportive home. Her parents encouraged her in all endeavors - gymnastics, dance and other creative outlets. When she was a teenager, she decided that what she wanted to do be as an adult was a fashion designer. Her parents found a way to send her to Claremont College, a prestigious women's college in update New York.
During and after college, two life changing things happened to her. First, she met a fellow sophomore student named Andrea Donalson. After that year, the two became roommates and later moved off-campus to an apartment together. They also became sorotiry sisters at Phi Gamma along with Ashely Holloway, TJ Vinson and Ellen Robinson. After graduation, Rita and Andrea moved to Manhattan. Rita's dream was to open a boutique to showcase her designs. Andrea had studied business and used some money she inherited from her parents to help fund the operations. Together in 1982, they became partners in "Lifestyles Unlimited". They hired Trish Cabre, another designer Rita had met while in college, to round out the firm. The second thing to happen was the manifestation of Rita's meta-gene in 1982, which altered her body in a way to give her amazing powers. She found that she had the ability to absorb moisture for the air and atmosphere around her, to increase it, and to release it in the forms of water, ice or steam. With Andrea's help and training, she honed her skills and took on the costumed identity of Hydro Girl in 1983. Rita continued her heroic adventures on the side for a few years, both solo and occasionally working with Andrea as Cat-Lady. It wasn't until the summer of 1986 when her life would take its next big turn. Along with six other heroes, she was gathered by a heroic sorcerer named Mystifier to help ward off an invasion from another dimension. During that adventure, she met the hero named Larynx and fell in love with him at first sight. After that adventure, the heroes formed a team called the Protectors. This allowed Hydro Girl a chance to see more of Larynx. (continued below...) |

After a little time of flirting with him, the two heroes became a couple. A few years later, they got engaged (1989) and then married (1990). Although she had become Mrs. Scott Ballard, though she kept her maiden name professional as she had built a reputation in the fashion industry.
She took a break from both her careers in the 90's when she and Scott decided to have a family. Their son Thomas William Ballard was born in 1992, and their twin daughters Kimberly and Alison Ballard were born in 1996. She tried to come back to both her former careers but soon found it difficult to juggle both along with motherhood. Something had to give. It was then she decided to retire from being a hero. On the rare occasion does she don her old costume, usually in some kind of major crisis.
Motivation: Rita has always been a very up front and honest woman. Very liberated, she went a long time standing upon her own two feet. When she saw something she wanted, she went after it with full enthusiasm. Her forward nature won her the heart of the man she loved. As a parent, she is fair but expects a lot of the children. She wants to support them and encourage them to be all they can be.
