Background: Shortly after his birth, infant Matthew Bradley was taken from his parents by the evil sorceror
Zandorok. (1977) The child was taken to another dimension and immediately exposed to powerful magicks that bound him eternally with the body of a newly born winged-dragon. For nearly a decade, the boy was raised as the creature, all part of a grand plan by Zandorok.
In late 1986, the hero called Mystifier finally located the boy and rescued him (see the story "Into The Dragons' Den"). Once the truth was revealed, the boy found he could easily return back to the form of which he born as well as become a dragon once more. Bring him back to Earth and into his home, the young sorceror hero tried to raise Matthew as if he were a younger brother. However, less than six months later, Mystifier departed on a long mission to find his long-lost parents, leaving the boy to be raised by his old mentor Sybil Leigh, a practicing witch in her own right. Sybil, however, did not have to raise the child alone. She had quite a bit of assistance from the other heroes in the Protectors. They each saw Matt as a younger sibling and took him under their wing both in training and in friendship. Using the identity of Flamethrower, the boy who could become a mighty dragon, became a member of the team and participated in many adventures with them.

Background (continued): Though he had the others, Matt felt abandoned by his original savior. Mystifier was gone for many years without any communication, and the boy grew up into an imbittered teen. The other members of the Protectors had a hard time keeping him in line, especially as many of their own lives moved off into the direction of marriage and having families of their own.
1998 was a difficult year for the young man. First, the Protectors were disbanded. Then, Sybil Leigh became deathly ill and that event brought Matt into a direct confrontation with Mystifier. Less than a year later, number of the members of the team were invited to join the Justice Gang, and Matt was convinced to go to the big league team as well. There he felt a little more comfortable as there were other members close to his own age. Motivation: For almost the first ten years of his life, Matt lived as a dragon in the wild. Coming back to the world of his birth, he had no family and had so much to learn and understand. He studied hard and came up to speed, but he always felt he was playing catch-up. He did not have a nurturing home-life nor one that was typical. His world was that of fantastical adventures, deadly threats and lots of violence. Without proper counterbalance, he grew up emotionally deficient. Often he would express himself through uncontrolled outbursts, both verbal and physical. |
