Hero Files: Time Lord
(under 4th Edition rules, plus my own take on time travel)

Background: Steven Hamlin was born on September 21, 1935, to George and Melanie Hamlin of Cambridge, Mass. As a boy, Steven was always fascinated by historical tales. After reading the H.G. Wells novel the Time Machine at age twelve, he knew he wanted to devote his time to science and the study of physics relating to time and spatial relations. A prize from a national science fair for high school juniors helped further fund his future education.

During his sophomore year of college, a concept involving electromagnetism in relation to quantum physics came to him in a dream. He applied those concepts to some plans he had to create a true time travel device. In 1957, he graduate college with honors and began his studies in the field of chronological physics. It was during that time, while working on a grant, he met and formed a competitive rivalry with Warren Rider.

In 1960, Rider learned of Hamlin's breakthroughs, he decided to steal the secrets for himself. This minor setback did not stop Steven from completing his portable time converter belt a year later. During one of the earliest tests, Steven attempted to go back to the day Rider stole his prototype. However he quickly learned that some events in a timeline were critical and any attempt to alter them could have disasterous consequences. Hamlin came to the conclusion that time travel could be very dangerous in the hands of a novice, and that his invention should only be used for the betterment of mankind.

When the police were having difficulty solving a murder, Hamlin stepped in using a cosutmed identity of the Time Lord to assist. He was easily able to travel back to the time of the murder and get a description of the killer. From there, he helped track the man down and to get a confession for the crime (8/61). A few months later, he encountered Rider who was now going by the criminal name of Timewarp.

In 1965, he teamed up with Phantom Lady during another battle with Timewarp. In 1966, Time Lord joined other heroes of Earth and beyond as the Justice Gang.

In 1975 during a battle with the race known as the Destroyers, Time Lord and Golden Archer were hurled back to ancient Greece. Damage to the converter belt left the duo stranded there for twelve years until Hamlin could fix the device. The two returned to the present time in 1979. In 1980, Steven Hamlin was forced to reveal to the world his alter ego was Time Lord, thanks to a nefarious scheme by Timewarp. This only further added to his credibility as an expert in the field of science he helped pioneer.

Motivation: Unlike a number of his comrades, Steven Hamlin has never married. A majority of his time is spent on continued research into historical periods of the past. Over the years, he has written a number of books on the subject and gives leactures as part of the academic circuit on the subject all over the world. Due to his extensive exposure to the time stream, Hamlin has found he is aging at a much slower rate than normal humans. He also keeps himself in good physical condition just the same.

Note On Time Travel: when travelling through time, a 3d6 roll must be made. The more experienced the traveller, the better is chances are to succeed in reaching the desired time period. If the player fails to roll his qualifier or less, 3D6 are rolled to determine how far off the date he and his party will land. Use the following chart for results:

  • 9 to 12: one day
  • 8, 13: one week
  • 7, 14: one month
  • 6, 15: one year
  • 5, 16: one decade
  • 4, 17: one century
