Background: During the mid 1960's, a young robotics engineer named Malcolm Southland made friends with another student, Steve Starlin, who was majoring in physics. Together, the two collaborated on a body armor prototype. It was Starlin's experients with a new metal called Vibraneom that ended up giving the armor some special properties. They named their creation the V-Man armor. During some testing of the suit, Starlin (who was wearing the armor at the time) heard an explosion. Returning to the lab, he found that Southland had been killed in the blast. He later learned that Viper had been behind the attack. Starlin took on the heroic identity of V-Man to avenge the murder of his good friend. (1969)
The actions of the armored hero attracted the attention of both the media and US government. V-Man was approached to be part of a heroic team called the Gladiators. After a short time, he was moved to another government program called SURGE. One of the other members of that team was Starlin's own cousin Damion who now went by the heroic name of G.Q. Jammer. Later, Starlin's younger brother Randy joined the team under the code name of Night Ranger. During a battle with a powerful teleporter named Psiosis, V-Man was transported across the cosmos to a planet called Znar (1974). Captured by the inhabitants, he was relieved of his damaged armor and imprisoned. The Znarch were in the middle of a war and thought he was a spy. Starlin was able convince them otherwise and soon used his scientific skills to help in the war efforts. They were able to repair and replicate the armor to outfit the alien troops. He lead this V-Force into victorious battle but was injured in the final attacks. The Znarch used their healing techniques to save Starlin and ultimately altered his genetic make-up to give him great power. With these new powers, Starlin went by the name of Black Star. He eventually was able to get back to Earth, but much time had passed (1985). SURGE was no longer together and Randy had been seriously crippled in battle with Mechanon. Steve vowed to care for his brother, feeling he was in part to blame for not being around when his family needed him. When Mechanon attacked a hospital in Baltimore in 1990, Black Star returned to action and worked along side of Rough Justice. Motivation: Black Star wrestles with divided responsibilities - family, science research and heroic duties. His time away from Earth affected him greatly as well, leaving him with feelings of isolation and independence. He is quick to volunteer for aerial reconaissance and often strikes opponents in battle from a distance with his energy blasts. |
