Artifact: Sword of Seimei
(under 4th Edition rules)

History: During the dark ages in Asia around 1299, large hordes of vampires began ravaging the country-sides. They destroyed villages and killed the inhabitants in savage massacres. Four nameless wizards gathered together to create a powerful weapon to drive the vampires back into the European continent from whence they originated. With their power, they were able to create an unbreakable sword to strike at the hearts of their foes. Alas, that would not be enough to turn the tide.

A lesser demon from Hell named Tseraphh presented himself to the wizards, making an offer to provide the extra magic needed to power this sword. His price was the pledge of the female wizard to be his servant. She agreed, and Tseraphh instilled the sword with the abilities to drain the regenerative powers of vampires. Also, the sword would be able to protect the wielder from the mind controlling tricks of the foes he would face.

The three wizards were so pleased with this that they failed to realize the demon's gifts came with some strings. First, no wielder could tap the Sword's power without first earning a special talisman from Tseraphh. Second, the Sword would slowly drain the intelligence of the wielder and at the same time make him more violent and blood thirsty like those he would be slaying. This was Tseraphh's curse to the weapon.

A barbarian named Llewyian was the first to wield the Sword of Seimei. With it he slew many a vampire. As he drove them back into Europe, he never realized how consumed he was becoming. Finally, Llewyian discarded the Sword in the height of a great battle, thinking he could better destroy his quarry with his own strength. The now dumb brute was overpowered and torn to shreads by a vampiric mob. The Sword was lost.

In the late 1800's, many a figure emerged in Europe claiming to possess the fabled Sword. However most proved to be charlatans for the true Sword was nearly invulnerable to all save magical attacks. None of the claimed fakes could pass the test of unbreakability. In 1898, a French man named Jaren Toreau possessed the fabled Sword but sold it to a Paris pawn shop in order to have money to care for his family. Since then, talk of the Sword began to surface in various collectors' circles around the world.

A sword collector from Hawaii named Kelei Natai purchased a sword matching Seimei's description in 1980 for $40,000. He did not personally believe in the Sword's history and only bought weapons for their potential financial investment. Ten years later, he turned a profit by selling the Sword to Johann G. Kirchoff, a wealthy Romanian.

The Sword of Seimei is an obvious, accessible focus that cannot be broken. It is a personal focus the requires a talisman of Tseraphh in order to use its extensive powers. It has negative side effects on anyone who uses the sword for prolonged periods of time. Its primary purpose is for the slaying of vampires.
