Enemies Revisited: Lazer
(under 4th Edition rules)

Welcome back to a feature I like to call "Enemies Revisited". This time, we have Lazer, that gun-toting crook that first appeared in the first Enemies book, published by Hero Games in 1982. Lazer was created by George MacDonald and illustrated by Mark Williams. Once again, it was Williams' art that endured me to the character. A few years later, when I was running my Rough Justice campaign, one of the players picked Lazer as a hunted. That gave me the perfect opportunity to bump him a bit for my gameworld (nothing too drastic).

His origin pretty much was generic enough that it could work in my game world easy enough. I didn't do much with it. I did, however, use him again as a leader figure in a group called the Enforcers. The other members were creations of someone from one of the APAs I belonged to at the time. That sort of allowed Lazer to move up to a threat for a whole team. So, check out how he appears in the World of Maenza and let me know what you think.

Background: Emil Nelson was a greedy man. In his youth, he supported himself with petty larceny. He would steal from lockers and cars at school or take things from local businesses. When he turned eighteen, he was signed up with the army in hopes to get away from the suspicions of the authorities. He soon was sent off to serve out of the country but he ended up coming back even more corrupt and self-centered. He left the military and used his illegal contacts to enter into the contraband weapons market.

Just as Emil was about to expand his operation, the local Mob discovered him and decided to take over. He tried to fight back, but in less than a month his contacts were turned against him. He barely escaped from his last warehouse just before it was bombed by the Mob. With only some prototypes of new weapons left in his car, Emil decided that he had to start over again. Using them and his personal skills, he took on the identity of Lazer and hired himself out to criminal organizations. Basically anyone who can meet his price is someone he'll work for.

He has made new contacts along the way, including with a trio of criminals who banded together as the Enforcers. Lazer often recommends these three for work as well, figuring that at times there are safety in numbers. Mover, Shaker and Machete are really the only people in the world he ever feels he can trust - as much as he can trust anyone.

Motivation: Lazer is driven by money. He is willing to work for anyone, except the Mob, in order to gain big bucks. Sometimes he'll commit crimes independently, but he prefers to let others work out the plans. He has been hired by groups like Project: Genetics, for example, to train gun-toting agents as well.
